In finance, the yield on a security is a measure of the ex-ante return to a holder of the security. It is one component of return on an investment, the other component being the change in the market price of the security.

The yield of an investment is measured by the earnings generated by that investment over a predefined period of time. Knowing the yield (how much you earn from your investment after a year, for example) can help you calculate your ROI (Return on Investment), by dividing the original amount invested by the yield.
